  1. Hi all,

I wrote this letter to the "Got Books" (the company who ran the store we were just at) since I was still feeling upset at what had happened. It has already been sent, and I hope it will result in amends. Lets hope so!

Just today, I was up at your Burlington Superstore. Myself, a teacher from Wayland Middle School, a Sudanese Refugee, and my sister had come with high hopes to make purchases for a school in Southern Sudan. You see, our new organization (a non-profit) Schools For Southern Sudan, had received 4 $25.00 coupons to your store. They had been given to the White House PreSchool in Sudbury, and then donated to us because of a personal connection. While at your store, which had all we needed plus more, we stocked up on teachers books for this very impoverished school. Concerned on how much money we spent, we checked out to see how much money we had left available. It turns out we had used up exactly $50.00 (2 of our certificates) and went to go buy some easy chapter books for the students. Several minutes after departing the check out, the cashier approached us and told us we weren't allowed to use more than one coupon, per one teacher a day. Seeing as we had already used up two, we were told we couldn't purchase any more books with the coupons. Neither the generous teacher who had donated the coupons, nor any of us had any idea of this policy since it was not stated anywhere on the actual coupon. Confused, we asked to see the manger. We stated the fact that one in our group was a teacher, and more importantly, that we were all representing a non profit organization; all of which was stated on the coupon as being a way in which your store "generously" donated back to the community. Upon stating even further that we had received the coupons from another school, we were told that the coupons shouldn't have been donated in the first place, and were not really transferable from one school to another. This also is not stated anywhere on your coupon. In fact, we were even told that it wasn't a "gift" at all but a marketing add. This was quite as a shock since everything on the "gift" card stated otherwise. Though the manager was very firm on the policy, she eventually told us (very grudgingly) that we could continue shopping and use the coupons. So, we went back to your very well stocked shelves and began picking out books that would be perfect for young students in Sudan. However, shortly after, the Sudanese man we were with, was then told we now couldn't use the coupons. Not wanting to press further, we all left. As we exited the building, the same cashier who had served us then told us, "Thank you." It was however implied by her tone that it was not in thanks for shopping there, but on the contrary, for leaving. You can be sure that the service we had received was quite on our minds, and had us leaving with very heavy hearts and confused minds. Yet again I will state that NOWHERE on the coupon did it state any of the policies so enforced, and very obviously were these coupons sent out without the intention of goodwill and charity. All of us involved were very disturbed by our day, and returned with only half of the books we had hoped to give to the awaiting kids in Sudan (who have NO books at all at the moment) and with this narrative to tell the other eagerly awaiting members of our organization about our very limited success. I hope you understand that this act of "marketing" has cost kids that have barely anything, the charity of a very kind woman from a Sudbury PreSchool, who gave up her free "gifts" from you in order to improve the lives of young children in Sudan. You can be sure that unless amends are made, we will discourage anyone in our organization, and certainly others if we are asked, from going to your store, and accepting "gifts of charity" from your stores. I really regret that this is what happened, and I hope your heart will be moved enough to encourage our organization to use your wonderful store again. The children in Sudan would certainly appreciate it. Sincerely, Dana Vanderburgh Vice President Schools For Southern Sudan PS. Please check out our website, schoolsforsouthernsudan.org to see what your books could bring to these children.
