Hello I'm Dana

Martin Luther King spoke of eliminating the injustices that overwhelmed the entire United States of America, but as I hope to think, had he lived longer, his ideas would have been preached to the world. His dream, not only a vision for the US, but for all people; everywhere. The great words of equality, “Injustice anywhere, is a threat to justice everywhere,” known to us all, may have even reached places like Yali Village, Sudan sooner than they have.

In this remote village of Southern Sudan, education is not a common right. In fact, it is a mere privilege just to get an elementary education. Being poor farmers, most families will not spend their hard earned money on an education for their able-bodied boys, and chore-tending girls. If children do end up with the chance to go to school, it is not even close to what we can relate to. All the children in the entire class share one notebook, and if they are lucky, end up with a half of a pencil; and here we are, flaunting a new binder, ballpoint pens, and Mac computers.

Charles Adeng Chayor, a former ‘Lost Boy of Sudan,’ has always remembered this small village he was born in, and has taken up this fight. Several years back, Project Care of the United Nations built a small school in Charles’ home village of Yali, but left it once it was built. Charles then began paying out of his own pocket to try to maintain the school.

However, the importance Charles felt, and still feels about educating the children of Sudan, drove him to begin to speak at schools, like Wayland Middle School, to try to raise awareness, and money for the school. Though successful at Wayland Middle School, the cash raised could not sustain a school. With this motivation, Charles founded the non-profit organization, Schools for Southern Sudan, and I am vice president.

The goal of this organization is to provide the supplies, food, uniforms, and all other necessities needed to allow the children in Yali Village to attend school. Hopefully in the near future, we will be able to start and maintain even more schools in Southern Sudan.

Though this whole speech about education may seem trivial to most of you, it is important to understand the values Charles has to offer to us young adults. He, like Martin Luther King, is fighting for the right of education for his people, and most importantly can inspire us to do the same. Education to us Americans is a right, we can’t seem to understand is not just another boring aspect of our young lives. There really are kids studying in the scorching sun, or numbing cold because of their determination to become educated. With Charles as my inspiration, I am committed to raising awareness about global education, and I hope you will, to some degree, do the same, not only for educational justice, but for any injustice in our troubled world.
